An Introduction to New Religious Movements (P00526)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : DIV-P-P00526 The course will use a two-pronged approach. In the first place, case studies of specific movements will be examined: the movements looked at in this way will include two African independent churches - the amaNazaretha of Isaiah Shembe and the Kimbanguist Church - the Rastafari movement from the Caribbean, and the Unification Church from Korea. Secondly, major themes in the emergence of these movements will be examined. These will include origins and causes, patterns of leadership, revelation (including dreams and visions), and missiological implications. The overall aim of the course is to make students aware of the wide range of religious movements which have come into existence in the last one hundred years, out of the interaction of Christianity and traditional or indigenous religions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
