The course will examine the rise of modern African theology from the 1960s onwards. It will look at some of the causes of the development of a specifically African theology, examine some of the main themes, which have concerned it over the last half century, and introduce some of the leading African theologians

The successful completion of this course should enable students to:
Understand the reasons for the rise of modern African theology
Show familiarity with many of the major themes of African theology, such as ancestors, initiation, wholeness, and liberation.
Be aware of the debate between the cultural and liberationist strands in African theology.
Be familiar with some of the main themes in African Women's theology
Have a working knowledge of the work of at least four modern African theologians.

Assessment will be by a 3,000 word essay to be submitted, on a subject of the student's choosing to be agreed in advance with the course manager.
