1940s: Art in an Age of Crisis (P00279)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : ACE-P-P00279 This course examines the principal art movements in Europe and America c.1930-50. The work of artists is set against the backdrop of international developments and patterns of disruption and change: the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War; the Holocaust; the onset of the Cold War; the emergence of the welfare state in Europe and a more automated social order in America. Particular emphasis will be placed upon examination of works of art available in public collections within Edinburgh. The purpose of this course is to examine the relationship between art and society at a moment of rapid social and cultural change. The aim is also to provide close acquaintance with major holdings of 20th-century art of major international significance which are available in Edinburgh.
Assessment Information
Principal means of assessment is a 4,000 word essay. In addition each candidate's performance will be monitored through the presentation of seminar material.
