History of Art Research Training (P00266)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : ACE-P-P00266

This course is shared between students on the MSc in History, Theory and Display, and the MSc in Scottish Art and Visual Culture. It comprises a weekly, hour long seminar co-ordinated by the postgraduate director, with input from staff across the School of Arts, Culture and Environment. Its focus is strictly practical, and its aim is the development of useful research skills, and problem solving. Its position in the programme, midway through the course is strategic. At this stage students will have done a substantial amount of research for essays, and will be thinking about their dissertations; the issues and problems they have encountered in doing their work will form the basis of class discussion. Topics will include the following: reading and writing for research, using archives, using art objects, using interviews for research, the museum as a research tool, and the exhibition as a research tool. The major focus of the course is the dissertation. The report students are asked to write concerns their plans for this; it will include a preliminary bibliography, an outline structure, and an extended commentary on the research field chosen, and problems or issues that surround it.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

A practical course focused on problem solving. It has two principal outcomes: First, the development of a self-critical approach to the student's own research. Through discussion and writing, the student will be able to say what it is they are doing, and why. Second, the course will provide very practical training in writing the dissertation, which ought to lead to improved quality.
