Introduction to the European Union (LW0022)

? Credit Points : 40  ? SCQF Level : 8  ? Acronym : LAW-1-LW0022

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the institutions, politics and policies of the European Union, through a study of the political and economic dimensions of European integration. The course is divided into two main parts. The first term explores political theories of integration, the original intentions of the architects of the EC Treaties and the political and legal institutions involved in policymaking. The second term explores economic theories of integration, traces economic integration in practice, and examines the main policy areas which come under EU competence (shared or exclusive). Key debates on attempts both to widen and to deepen the Union are explored in the final term.
