? Additional Class Information : Three other one-hour classes: one Written Language, one Spoken Language and one Literature tutorial. These are held through the week usually at 11.10am (but some at 10am or 12), at a convenient time/day arranged by course organiser.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

In First Year, the exemption system applied to 1B (non-beginner) groups is designed to encourage consistency in application throughout the academic session, as cramming for exams at the end of the year is pedagogically inappropriate for language learning. By providing students with the perceived 'reward' of an exemption from degree exams they are motivated to channel their learning in the most suitable directions for language acquisition. This is an important preparation for the year abroad and Senior Honours language because it is especially important that the main structures of the language be consolidated by that stage. In addition, exemptions have a demonstrable motivational effect, raising the incentive to perform well, and thus improving student preparation for Senior Honours.

Assessment Information

3 literature essays; 4 written language exercises; 2 oral presentations; 2 class exams. Class work 40%; degree exam 60% (Exemption from degree exam if 60% in coursework).
