Tolstoy and Russian Society 1830-1880 (HI0031)

This is a study of Tolstoy's work and life in relation to the Russia of his time. The first few sessions are devoted to background questions such as the nobility, the peasantry and conflicts within the intelligentsia. We then turn to Tolstoy's major works notably War and Peace and Anna Karenina, which we set in the context both of Tolstoy's life and of the political and cultural situation in Russia of the day.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent. Visiting students should normally have 3 to 4 History courses at Grade B or above. Before enrolling students on this course, Directors are asked to contact the History Honours Admissions Secretary to ensure that a place is available (tel. 503783).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The general aim, as always, is to encourage historical problem-solving, writing and oral skills. The particular purpose is to introduce students to the difficulties and the fascination of using literary texts as historical source material in the context of nineteenth-century Russia.
