French Language (Intermediate, Level 1) A (FR0002)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 7  ? Acronym : LLC-1-FR0002

This course in spoken and written French is designed for students who have some knowledge of French (approximately Standard Grade/GCSE level) and who wish to extend it. Note: Numbers on this course are restricted therefore Directors of Studies should contact the division of European Languages and Cultures' Teaching Office (650 8421) to confirm availability before registering students for this course. All students take all elements of assessment including the degree examination (2 hours).

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A Pass in French at Standard Grade or GCSE or equivalent. Students with a lower level of attainment may be admissible, but should consult the Course Organiser. Students with higher levels of attainment will normally be admitted to level 2, but should take French 1B (FR0076) if they have A level A or B or Higher A.

? Prohibited combinations : FR0003 (which is the same course taken in Semester 2)

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Priority to enrol will be given as follows
1. Students from the College of Science and Engineering, the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and visiting students.
2. Students from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, but from outwith the School of LLC (Literatures, Languages and Cultures).
3. Students from the School of LLC, but outwith DELC.

No students on programmes owned by DELC will be admitted to these courses.

? Costs : The Microlab booklet and other materials distributed in class are charged at £4.00.

? Additional Class Information : Students must undertake 'pairs' of class sessions: Mon & Thur - 1400 - 1550; or Tue & Fri - 1400 - 1550; or Tue & Fri 1610 - 1800.

The 'other required attendance' involves Microlab grammar work.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Improved competence in the four main skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing French. This greater competence is intended to lead to greater confidence and to enhance the ability to learn independently.

Assessment Information

Regular coursework including class tests and oral assignments.
Coursework 55%; exam 45%.
