Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

English Language 1 has 3 broad aims:

1. It introduces students to the study of English Language in a rounded and systematic way.

2. An introduction to the fundamental analytic concepts involved in the study of linguistic structure of English today and its broad historical development.

3. The course will give students the technical means of engaging in the analysis and explication of English as a language, not only accounting for its most 'standard' and 'constant' features, but also establishing the exensive social and geographical variety of the language, both today and in earlier times.

Assessment Information

Three items of assessment: an exam at the end of semester 1 (40% of the final mark for the course), and one essay and one assignment in semester 2 (each consituting 30% of the final mark for the course).
