Scottish Literature 1 (EL0002)

(i) An introduction to the study of literature, the issues of literary criticism and the problems of reading, with texts from a variety of literary periods and genres. (ii) A study of the Scottish Medieval and Renaissance writing from Barbour to the mid-seventeenth century, and including works by Dunbar, Henryson, Lindsay and Drummond.

Entry Requirements

? Prohibited combinations : Scottish Literature 1 may not be taken with English Literature 1 except by students enrolled for the MA Honours in English and Scottish Literature

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To develop independent thought and the ability to communicate information effectively. Your courses will encourage you to work independently, to discover and synthesise information, and to be able to select the most relevant materials from a wide range of reading. You will learn how to assess the reliability of evidence and weigh a variety of competing or conflicting arguments, to analyse complex questions, to exercise problem-solving skills. In developing and organising your own arguments, you will learn how to present a coherent, reasoned and well-supported set of conclusions in clear prose. At the same time, you will be developing oral communication skills through active participation in tutorials and seminars.

Assessment Information

4 essays (up to 2000 words); 1 class exam. Course work 40%; class exam 30%; degree exam 30%.
