Deaf Studies (ED1078)? Credit Points : 15 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EDU-P-ED1078 This module locates Deaf Education within the broader framework of Deaf Studies, enabling course participants to explore critically the differing constructions of deafness. It will offer an introduction to the key notions of Deaf identity, Deaf community and Deaf culture and will explore the history and present reality of Deaf communities in Scotland, the UK and world-wide. It will also pay particular attention to the role of sign languages in establishing and maintaining cultural boundaries. This module is the first in the MEd/PGD in Education Support (Deaf Education). It is also open to individuals from other MMS programmes and would be of interest to a range of professionals, eg. speech and language therapists, social workers, educational psychologists, as well as teachers.
