Twentieth-Century Prose (CT0100)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-3-CT0100 The course will consist primarily of close analytical readings of a range of short stories and novellas by leading Gaelic prose writers from 1960 onwards, including Tormod Caimbeul, Iain Mac a' Ghobhainn (Iain Crichton Smith), Tormod MacGill-Eain, Iain Moireach and Eilidh Watt. In addition to considering the dominant themes and questions addressed by these writers, the course will give close attention to questions of structure and narrativity, and the difficult evolution of new literary genres in Gaelic. The texts studied will be placed in the context of the work of other twentieth-century prose writers and of Gaelic literature and culture more generally. The course will be delivered in Gaelic. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
This course is intended to develop students' awareness of the thematic range, narrative devices and linguistic styles of important modern Scottish Gaelic prose texts, by a combination of close reading of primary texts, class discussion, and reference to relevant secondary literature. The course will be delivered in Gaelic.
Assessment Information
Equal weight is given to assessed coursework and to the Degree Examination. The essay is worth 50% and the Degree Examination is worth 50% of the overall mark for the course. The Degree Examination consists of a single 2-hour paper to be sat in the May/June diet.
