Gaelic Literature 2 (CT0079)

Detailed study of a) selections of Gaelic poetry from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with emphasis on the social context of texts, and b) selections of Modern Irish literature, with emphasis on the development of reading skills in Modern Irish.

This course is normally taken as part of Gaelic 2B.

? Pre-requisites : A pass at 55% or above in Gaelic 1A or Gaelic 1B

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to build on and extend the work of Gaelic 1A/1B, and to prepare students for Honours work in Celtic, by providing (1) an introduction to the Scottish Gaelic verse of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and (2) an introduction to the closely related language and literature of Gaelic Ireland.

Assessment Information

1 essay in semester 2; regular language and translation exercises throughout the year; 1 2-hour class exam at the end of semester 1. Class work 50%, degree exam 50%.
