This course will look at Lucretius' De rerum natura. Selections from the text will be studied and analysed in detail and interpreted in its literary and historical contexts.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will: have read substantial parts of Lucretius' work in Latin, and the remainder in translation; have a thorough knowledge of the content of the book; have a good knowledge of the language and style of the author; have a basic understanding of the literary and social conventions of philosophical didactic Latin poetry; be acquainted with the use and function of philosophical argument in its context; be familiar with elements of Epicurean thought which were central to Roman ethical discourse; be aware of various modes of representing thoughts formulated in the context of one language and culture through the medium of another language in a different cultural context.

Assessment Information

One essay - 30%; one (2-hour) Degree Examination - 70%.
