Canadian Studies 1A is an introductory course which enables you to explore a range of disciplines taught within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences from an area studies perspective. The course uses analytical tools developed across the Humanities and Social Sciences to explore questions of cultural and political identity in contemporary Canada.

The course analyses the emergence of a multicultural state in Canada, examining its Aboriginal, French and British foundations, including the particular impact of Scottish migration to Canada. It then considers how social inequality, the proximity of the USA and the dynamics of nationalism in Quebec shape contemporary Canada.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, you will have developed a good understanding of Canada's diversity, a capacity to approach area studies in an interdisciplinary fashion and an appreciation of a number of different intellectual disciplines taught within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The lectures enable you to develop your skills in absorbing new information, taking notes, thinking critically and engaging with a large group of students. The tutorials enable you to work in small groups and develop transferable skills in oral presentation, interpretation and analytical debate. Individual and group projects within the course enable you to develop your skills in research, writing, analysis and presentation.

Assessment Information

Tutorial participation, presentations and analytical contribution to discussion: 20%

Essay : 30%

Final Examination (2 hours): 50%

Students who have failed to submit their essay will be permitted to sit the final examination but they will receive a mark of zero for the essay component of the course.
