Materials Chemistry 2 (U02663)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : CHE-2-MatChem Materials Chemistry 2 will introduce "Materials" as an area where Chemists have a leading role in the development and application of the new materials that are all pervasive in modern life. The course will explain how bulk mechanical, optical and conducting properties of materials can be related to factors such as electronic structure, crystallinity and molecular structure through an introduction to bonding in solids, band theory, crystal chemistry, materials synthesis and characterisation methods, together with examples of application in areas such as microelectronics, polymer science, catalysis and nanotechnology. Lecture material will be supported by laboratory work. Entry RequirementsSubject AreasHome subject areaDelivery Information? Normal year taken : 2nd year ? Delivery Period : Not being delivered ? Contact Teaching Time : 5 hour(s) per week for 11 weeks All of the following classes
? Additional Class Information : 28 hours lecture, 7h examples classes, 12 hours laboratories. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. describe the basic principles of solid state synthetic methods, polymer synthesis and techniques for the fabrication of semiconductor devices 2. describe the factors which relate the bulk physical properties of materials such as polymers and semiconductors to their molecular structure. 3. outline the theory and application of a range of methods for characterization of the molecular properties of materials 4. perform accurate laboratory work relating to a range of materials synthesis and analysis methods and have basic knowledge of a wider range of more sophisticated analysis methods. Assessment Information
Assessment will be laboratory mark, an essay, tutorial work and a 3 hour written paper at the end of the semester.
The overall mark will be calculated as: 0.75(written mark) + 0.25(laboratory mark) with the written mark = 0.8 EX + 0.1WE + 0.1 TUT where EX = the % mark from the end of semester degree examination, WM = the % mark from the written exercise and TUT = the % mark from the tutorial exercises. This corresponds to 40% of the overall assessment based on continuous assessment or course work. Exam times
