Sociology 1B (SY0116)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : SPS-1-SY1bh This course is designed to explore sociological thinking with regard to a number of issues of contemporary concern. Topics will include risk, aspects of post modernity, intimate relations, sociology of the body, the rise of the image, and emerging forms of inequality. Entry Requirements? Special Arrangements for Entry : A quota of 320 students, with preference given in the following order: (1) First year students admitted to a degree including Sociology (including BA Humanities & Social Science) and Visiting Students holding a written offer of a place; (2) First year students whose main subject is in SSPS, or whose main subject has a joint degree with Sociology (including Religion and Combined Studies); (3) Students taking second-year SSPS half-courses; (4) First Year students taking BA Humanities & Social Science; (5) other first year students in CHSS. ? To understand certain key sociological concepts, particularly those bearing on contemporary society. To further explore the relationship between sociological argument and evidence.
Assessment Information
One 1500 word essay (40%), one two-hour exam (60%). Students are required to pass the exam to pass the course.
