Strategic Management (U02706)

Strategic Management is an integrated course which focuses on the nature of the general management function. Partly taught through the case study method, it is aimed at providing a framework for integrating concepts and techniques of strategic management, as well as applying those to a variety of organisations and business contexts. Students are also being taught the skills and techniques of delivering oral presentations in management.

The course is divided into three parts: strategy analysis, strategy formulation and implementation. Topics covered include: industry analysis; resource and capabilities analysis; business stategies; corporate strategy; organisational design and control; strategic entrepreneurship.

? Additional Class Information : The course involves strategy tutorials where students apply concepts taught in the lectures, and presentation tutorials where they are taught the skills of making presentations in management.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- understand key concepts and techniques of strategic management;
- apply strategy concepts and frameworks taught to real-world situations and problems;
- apply a framework for conducting an analysis of a strategic situation, including an ability to analyse a situation, formulate recommendations;
- communicate such analysis by written and oral means.

Assessment Information

- 70% examination
- 20% group written report, which is strategic analysis of a case study
- 10% group presentation, whereby teams present orally their case study analysis
