The Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study has been formulated as a dynamic online publication in order to provide the most up to date information possible. Master versions of the Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study incorporating all changes to date are archived twice a year on 1 September and within the first three University working days prior to the start of Semester 2 in January. Please note that some of the data recorded about this course has been amended since the last master version was archived. That version should be consulted to determine the changes made.

Sleeping Sickness, Malaria and Toxoplasmosis (U02672)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : MED-4-MI30

This course will look at important protozoan parasites of man and his domestic animals. Many of these are zoonoses and they are frequently arthropod vector-borne. Many, but not all, occur in the tropics. Patterns of transmission of and infection by protozoan parasites and the concept of 'microparasites' will be considered. Sleeping sickness (trypanosomiasis), theileriosis and malaria will be included as important and diverse examples of vector-borne diseases. Comparative pathogenesis and immunology of sleeping sickness, Chagas' disease (Trypanosoma cruzi), leishmaniasis and malaria will be covered. Antigenic variation and other immune evasion mechanisms of protozoan parasites will be studied. Toxoplasmosis will be used as an example of a zoonotic and congenital infection, while East Coast fever and tropical theileriosis will be used as examples of important tick-borne diseases with distinctive pathogenic mechanisms and immunology. Modern molecular and classical parasitological methods of diagnosis of these infections will be studied and options for control will also be considered.
