Outdoor Environmental and Sustainability Education 3/4 (U02471)

Whist environmental education is one of the established cornerstones of education outdoors there are also opportunities to use outdoor locations to aid understanding of 'sustainability'. In many agencies techniques ranging from formal 'field studies' (to aid understanding of the principles of earth processes and ecology) through to 'environmental sensitization' (for understanding sustainability) are employed. This course considers these in an educational framework and explores the application of a wide range of teaching techniques in a practical context. Critical review of the rationales, concepts, techniques and their praxis will be a feature of the course. The course will involve local and possibly residential fieldwork.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completing this course students will be able to:
1. adopt a critical reflective stance on the theory of direct engagement with the outdoors as a basis for environmental and sustainability education
2. critically review a range of approaches and techniques in common use in outdoor environmental and sustainability education
3. comment on the purposes and appropriateness of such approaches to education
4. apply a variety of 'modern experiential' and 'traditional' field studies techniques during practical investigations of a range of natural and managed ecosystems
5. evaluate and select appropriate techniques to develop a teaching programme at appropriate levels to introduce others to environment and sustainability issues
6. comment on the relevance, value and status of outdoor environmental and sustainability education for professional practice
7. demonstrate awareness of comparative impacts (local and global) of various outdoor activities and comment on their sustainability.

Assessment Information

Students will submit a written assignment (approx 3000 words) at the end of course. This will accrue 75% of the final mark for the course.In addition satisfactory completion of a practical programme of outdoor environmental studies, and completion of a technical and reflective field log are requirements of this course. This will accrue 25% of the final mark for the course.
