Outdoor Education: Critical Perspectives 3 (U02241)

This third year course provides an introduction to research methods, research in outdoor education, critical theory and critical analysis in the outdoor education context. Students will engage in review and discussion of relevant literature and further develop critical analysis and synthesis skills through reading, group work and essay writing. A residential weekend will provide an outdoor education context for linking theory and practice. Assignments will allow students to apply their knowledge of research methods, critical theory and critical analysis skills to each task.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of the role of research in outdoor education,
2. demonstrate an understanding of critical theory and critical perspectives on outdoor education philosophy and practice,
3. conduct an independent review of relevant literature,
4. critically analyse key concepts and arguments in outdoor education literature,
5. construct a research proposal based on a review of relevant literature,
6. construct a philosophical argument addressing a critique(s) of outdoor education
