Sensuous Geographies (U01721)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : GEO-3-SENSGEOG

This course will provide an introduction to the key themes, concepts and theoretical debates surrounding the body, embodiment, and sensuality in current geographical thought. After providing an initial overview of the development of philosophies such as humanism, phenomenology and vitalism, the course will critically examine some of the ways in which contemporary geographers and other theorists in the social sciences have begun to negotiate embodied-sensuous geographies (for example, through performativity and non-representational theory). Alongside student seminars and group discussions the course will also draw upon a number of historical and contemporary case studies from twentieth outdoor cultures, to the installation of site-specific art.

This course will:

introduce students to key themes, concepts and current theoretical debates on the body, embodiment, and sensuality;

provide an overview of the development of philosophies such as humanism, phenomenology and vitalism and of contemporary work in areas such as performativity and non-representational theory;

develop an appreciation of the validity of qualitative sources and methodologies.
