From City State to Empire in the Near East (U00912)

The course will examine the rise of city states in the third millennium BC through to the period of expansive territorial empires in the first millennium. Emphasis is upon the rain-fed farming zone of Upper Mesopotamia, although key comparisons will be drawn with developments in the irrigated south as well.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Theoretical Understanding of: emphasis will be upon changes in the structural pattern of settlement and how these relate to the development of the political economy. As a result of this class students should have a good understanding of how social and political entities can be recognized from field evidence as well as the dynamic processes that result in state development.
Practical and Professional Skills. The class will provide the opportunity for students to evaluate archaeological data and to critically analyze these data using various of theoretical approaches.
Transferable Skills: the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and their interpretation.
