Advanced Topics in Phonology: Prosody (Honours) (U00660)

This course is an introduction to structural and phonetic aspects of prosody. We will discuss theories of prosodic organisation and intonational structure, the grammatical and pragmatic functions of intonation and phrasing, and the range of possible structural and realisational differences across languages.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Honours Foundation: Phonology & Phonetics or equivalent

? Prohibited combinations : Advanced Topics in Phonology (LI0050), Advanced Topics in Prosody (LI0051)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of current prosodic theories and supporting evidence, critical evaluation of published research papers, skills in interpreting instrumental records of acoustic correlates of prosodic structure.
