Acronym : EDU-1-EducB This course is designed to complement Education 1Ah and the entry requirement is that students have completed Education 1Ah. This course is designed to introduce students to some key educational concepts and provide a forum for debate and discussion of some of the issues associated with the provision, experience and outcomes of education, at an individual, societal and global level. The course will consider policy, research and practice in education, exploring ways in which individuals and groups experience education in its various forms in Scotland and elsewhere. The course will also contribute to the preparation of students for their work based placement, or for equivalent activities as appropriate. Students' active use of research on this course will develop an understanding of the links between theoretical perspectives and professional action. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. To identify contrasting perspectives on educational provision 2. To engage students in analysis of the debates concerning the provision of education in contemporary society; 3. To enable students to acquire the skills and understandings that are common to educational professionals, such as the local and national context of their work; 4. To foster a critical attitude to questions relating to both educational policy and educational practice; 5. To contribute to the effective preparation of students for their work-based placements, or equivalent, and enable them to understand the relationships between professional action and theoretical perspectives. Assessment Information
One 2000 word assignment, to be submitted at the end of the semester. For students in the School of Education on a programme leading to a professional qualification for teaching, the assignment task will look forward to the Year 1 placement undertaken in semester two and following the placement students will be expected to write up reflections (500words) in their professional development portfolio (PDP). For non School of Education students or students not working towards a professional award in teacher the assignment will be based on a comparable activity, the details of which will be intimated at the beginning of semester two.
