This course is designed to introduce students to some key educational concepts and provide a forum for debate and discussion of some of the issues associated with the provision, experience and outcomes of education, at an individual, societal and global level. The course will consider policy, research and practice in education, exploring the situation of the learner in terms of lifespan development and identifying and evaluating the factors which impact upon both learning and teaching. Throughout the course we will explore the ways in which individuals and groups experience education in its various forms in Scotland and elsewhere. The course will also contribute to the preparation of students for their work based placement, or for equivalent activities as appropriate.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. To identify contrasting perspectives on learning theory
2. engage students in the study of theoretical principles underpinning teaching and learning, and of the different contexts in which these activities take place;
3. Critically consider what makes for effective learning in specific contexts for particular learners
4. To enable students to acquire the skills and understandings that are common to educational professionals, such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
5. Identify contrasting perspectives that relate to human development across the lifespan
6. To foster a critical attitude to questions relating to learning, teaching and lifespan development;
7. To contribute to the effective preparation of students for their work-based placements, or equivalent, and enable them to understand the relationships between professional action and theoretical perspectives.

Assessment Information

A piece of analytical writing (2000 words) demonstrating an ability to identify contrasting perspectives on learning theory and lifespan development and the application of these theoretical perspectives to professional action.
