Sociology 1A (SY0115)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : SPS-1-SY1ah This course introduces some of the key ideas of the discipline by examining the relationship between 'individuals' and 'societies'. Among the topics will be the social nature of the self, the influence of groups, gender identities, nationalism and the city. Entry Requirements? Special Arrangements for Entry : A quota of 340 students, with preference given in the following order: (1) First year students admitted to a degree including Sociology (including BA Humanities & Social Science) and Visiting Students holding a written offer of a place; (2) First year students whose main subject is in SSPS, or whose main subject has a joint degree with Sociology (including Religion and Combined Studies); (3) Students taking second-year SSPS half-courses; (4) First Year students taking BA Humanities & Social Science; (5) other first year students in CHSS. ? To understand certain key sociological concepts, particularly those which link 'individuals' to 'society'. To develop an introductory understanding of the relationship between sociological argument and evidence.
Assessment Information
One 1500 word essay (40%), one two-hour exam (60%).
