Psychology 2 (PS0002)

This course aims to develop students' understanding of the interplay between research evidence and theoretical approaches in contemporary scientific psychology, as well as making links to relevant historical background in the following core areas: Neuropsychology; sociobiology, genetics and evolution of behaviour; perception and cognition; developmental psychology and learning; differential and social psychology; research design, methodology and statistics in psychology.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Psychology 1

? Special Arrangements for Entry : A quota of 200 students, with preference given to students intending to study Psychology at Honours level, followed by students wishing to take a treble in Psychology to complete an ordinary degree and lastly students wishing to take Psychology 2 to complete a double.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should have an understanding of the different approaches used to investigate psychological issues and the means by which psychologists obtain and evaluate evidence and draw conclusions in various areas of psychology. They should know how to perform psychological experiments, how to carry out non-experimental research in psychology, how to interpret and draw quantitative conclusions from psychological data and how to present psychological results and summarise theoretical knowledge relevant to a particular topic in a clear, well-organised manner

Assessment Information

2 practical reports and a 2 hour degree exam with 3 essay questions at the end of Semester 1.

2 practical reports and a 2 hour degree exam with 3 essay questions at the end of Semester 2.

There is also a statistics examination (pass required in this for entry to Psychology honours, but does not contribute to overall mark for course).
