Introduction to Philosophy 1 (PP0002)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : PPL-1-IP1-PH This course is a general introduction to Philosophy. Questions discussed include: what is the source of the authority of moral principles? To what extent can moral judgements be be rationally justified? Do we have free will? Are mind and body distinct entities? What is the nature of causality? The aim of the course is to train students to think and express themselves clearly by means of reflection to central philosophical questions such as these. Reference will be made, where appropriate, to the views of both contemporary and classical philosophers. Entry Requirements? This course is not accepting further student enrolments. Variants? 3 x 950 word essays, 1 class exam, 1 degree exam. Coursework: each essay and class exam counts for 25%; exemption at 60% or over. Final assessment without exemption: 50% degree exam; 50% coursework; must obtain at least 34% in degree exam.
