Introduction to embodied cognition (P01266)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : PPL-P-VTPHILIEC This course introduces and examines some varieties of the increasingly popular conception of mind as essentially 'embodied and embedded'. Such conceptions depict thought and reason as in some way inextricably tied to the details of our gross bodily form, our abilities of action and intervention, and the enabling web of social, cultural, and technological scaffolding in which we live, move, learn and think. Topics may include: the role of action in reason and in perception; the nature of presence; the plasticity of sensing and of the sense of self; the possibility of alternate forms of embodiment; the relation between minds, brains, and tools for thought (such as pen, paper, and PC); and the kinds of philosophical and scientific explanatory strategies suited to understanding the embodied mind.
