Poetry and Society in Early Medieval Britain (P01085)

An examination of early Welsh and Irish poetry and the social structures, beliefs and expectations that underlay artistic production. The issues to be addressed include patterns of patronage, the nature of the audience, the place of the poet in society, survival and transmission of texts.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an appreciation of the range of technical and social factors underlying the production of poetry in the early medieval period.

The place of early medieval poetry within literary genres and its uses and limitations as an 'historical' source.

Assessment Information

One essay of c.4,000 words.
