Social Work in Context (PG) (P00639)

This course incorporates 3 main elements (i) Enquiry & Action Learning - designed to enhance students problem solving skills and knowledge of the 3 main domains of SW practice i.e. children and families, community care and criminal justicce (ii) SW Law & Welfare Rights - aim to ensure students have a good understanding of the Scottish Legal system and detailed knowledge of professional law of relevance to-day and practice.(iii) Psychology/Human Development - examine a range of theoretical perspectives relating to Psychology and Human Development over the life cycle.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

EAL: Explanations for characteristics and circumstances of service users & services needed; Range of need of people who use services and their carers - social processes by which needs are defined and acted upon; Factors guiding choice and evaluation of interventions; Relationship between agency policies, legal requirements, ethical principles and professional boundaries; Statutory basis of reports and requirement to share with relevant parties; Legal requirements of data protection and right of citizen access to information about them; Relationships between agency policies, legal and regulatory requirements and professional boundaries shaping services in inter-disciplinary contexts; Working across professional and discipline boundaries; Facilitating service integration, inter-agency collaboration and partnership; Relationships between justice, care and control in social welfare & community justice and their practical and ethical implications. Law: Legal bases for intervention and significance of relationships with statutory social services - education, housing, health, criminal justice, income maintenance and other services by voluntary organisations and support groups; Concepts of rights, responsibility, freedom, authority a power - practice of s/workers as moral and statutory agents; S/Workers' duties and responsibilities to protect public & uphold law; Legislative & legal frameworks, service standards, practice guidelines & practice codes; The application of legislation in practice, statutory responsibility & conflict between statute, policy & practice; Legislation on the people's rights, esp measures designed to tackle discrimination.Psychology/Human Development: Ind. & social development theories, identity & functioning - infancy to old age & death; Nature, characteristics & effects of developmental delay, disruption & trauma & significance of resilience. Knowledge, skills & values necessary to understand & take effective action in a variety of s/work contexts.
