History and the Writer in Latin America (HS0033)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : LLC-4-HS0033

The aim of this option is to examine how writers interpret historical experience in the search for a distinctive cultural identity in Latin America. Texts have been chosen to illustrate outstanding historical issues and to reflect the regional and ethnic diversity of Latin America. Particular attention will be paid to the way in which formal innovations have arisen from efforts to find an authentic voice which might reflect collective as well as individual experience. The option will also explore how many writers have chosen to use fantastic elements to challenge the conventions of literary realism and thereby express other perceptions of historical reality.
