i) An introduction to the study of literature, the issues of literary criticism and the problems of reading, with texts from a variety of literary periods and genres. ii) a study of the English Renaissance from Shakespeare to Milton.

Entry Requirements

? Prohibited combinations : May not be taken with Scottish Literature 1 except by students enrolled for the MA Honours in English and Scottish Literature.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Places in this course which has a quota of 270 students have already been fully taken up by students for whom it is a prescribed course. It is regretted that no further enrolments can be permitted in session 2005/06.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The main objective of English Literature 1 is to encourage students to become self-conscious about their reading processes and critical practice. To that end, the course is divided into two sections, 'Problems of Reading' and 'Literature & History: the Renaissance', both of which are organised in relation to the shared 'core' course taken by both Scottish and English Literature students. The emphasis in the first section is upon providing students with a grounding in current theoretical debates in relation to a wide range of primarily modern writing; the second section focuses on the problems of reading historically in relation to a specific national context.
