This half-course provides an introduction to the origins of contemporary Canada. It focuses on geographical and historical perspectives, examining the interaction between people and resources and illustrating the peopling of the northern half of North America. In particular, this course looks at the regions and regional identities which comprise Canada, and it analyses immigration and changing political structures.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will have a broad appreciation of the geographical and historical forces which have created contemporary Canada. They will be able to describe its distinctiveness in its North American context. They will be aware of the contributions that different disciplinary approaches can make to the study of a country in its contemporary setting. Completion of this course will thus add breadth of understanding to their own particular programme of study, both in a disciplinary and a geographical sense.

Assessment Information

This half course will require students to complete one short assignment and one assessed essay of 2000 words. At the end of the academic year, students will take a degree examination consisting of one 2-hour paper. In assessing the overall mark, the short assignment will be worth 10%, the essay 25% and the final examination 65%.
